The Hippocratic Oath needs to be valued highly.

For medical students - the new doctors here – you have to determine that choosing the major of medicine means to be willing to sacrifice for people’s health and happiness, to enrich yourself with knowledge and mercy not with money or fame. The noble doctor Le Huu Trac used to say: “Not any job is more ethic than medical one and not any job is more inhuman than unethical medical one”. When being alive, Uncle Ho said: “Good doctors must be like good mothers”. That’s absolutely correct. Being a doctor is the noblest job that is directly related to people’s life and health.

In 460 BC, Hippocrates – the Father of Medicine – wrote a seminal document on the ethics of medical practice to train himself and set an example for his doctor learners as well. This document called the Hippocratic Oath which defines good medical practice and morals and is still relevant and in use today by medical community worldwide. The new doctors of Vo Truong Toan University have to swear the Hippocratic Oath solemnly to enter medical practice.

In Vietnam, doctor Le Huu Trac (also called Hai Thuong Lan Ong) - the founder of the national medicine - said at the beginning when it was formed: “Working in health science means to save human life; those who work in this field must care other people’s worries and rejoice over their happiness. They should consider saving human life as their duty instead of looking for fame”. Then he brought out nine medical rules seen as medical oath, which conveys the meaning of Hippocratic Oath and still remains its value for Vietnamese practitioners nowadays.

We hope the new doctors to be aware of your duty in this special career. You must be proud of the honors our society gives you and swear the Hippocratic Oath in order to train yourself to achieve moral values needed for being good doctors.
